Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, will be held on May 28, 2018. The holiday was held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970. It marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

LZ Peace Memorial observed Memorial Day 2018 in 90+ degree heat. It was hot but one of the guys said, "Compared to being in Vietnam, this is nothing."

There were almost 100 people who attended. Some wore big hats, some wore hats festooned with military insignias, some wore t-shirts emblazoned with sayings and slogans. Four bagpipers marched in and piped their way into our hearts.

John Paddock, aka Johnny One-Wing was presented a plaque thanking him for his devoted service, expecially for all the hard work he does behind the scenes for the Agent Orange Memorial, and being the host for the Agent Orange ceremonies when new names are added to that memorial.

How It All

Came About

It started on a hill in Pleiku

Joe Falzone and Nick Parnello, two young soldiers from Rockford, met while in Plekiu, South Vietnam in 1969, and they vowed to meet for supper if and when they ever made it back home. They did and here's the rest of the story.
